13,416 kunda removal drives conducted and 171,298 kgs of kundas discovered since the beginning of 2025
Karachi, May 18, 2025: K-Electric’s operations against electricity theft and defaulters continue across the city. With support from law enforcement agencies, police, and security, KE removed its own 250 kva PMT installed in Ittehad Town, Baldia. Later on, miscreants illegally installed 500 kva PMT on their own and reconnected to the network and continued stealing electricity. The illegal PMT was disconnected and dismantled today, having total outstanding dues of PKR 67 million. Electricity was being stolen from a high-tension line through this PMT to supply power illegally to a residential area. Despite multiple reminders, no payments were cleared.
Similar actions are ongoing against defaulters and the kunda mafia in various parts of the city by the utility, including Malir, Landhi, Korangi, Surjani Town, and Gulistan-e-Jauhar. Since the beginning of the year, 13,416 kunda removal drives have been conducted and 171,298 kgs of kundas discovered.
“Seventy percent of the power network is exempt from load-shedding, with uninterrupted 24-hour electricity supply in these areas. The remaining 30% of the network faces challenges such as electricity theft and non-payment of bills. In these areas, load-shedding schedules are implemented based on the level of theft and non-payment. The schedule is publicly available on K-Electric’s website.” Shared KE spokesperson, Imran Rana.
“Illegal connections not only violate network safety protocols but also damage KE’s infrastructure and pose serious, life-threatening risks to citizens. We urge customers, community leaders, and local representatives to discourage electricity theft and ensure timely bill payments to enable an uninterrupted power supply across the city. Free electricity is not a viable option. We also appeal to law enforcement agencies and civic authorities for their continued support in this effort.” He added further.
KE has inaugurated two new feeders in the Marble Industry area along with another feeder to enhance reliable power supply for existing and upcoming businesses and residential areas. These feeders are expected to reduce faults and support uninterrupted electricity, boosting commercial activity. KE’s senior leadership, including Head of Distribution Operations Sheikh Humayun Saghir, was present at the inauguration and received appreciation from the community.
KE has emphasized that illegal interference with electrical infrastructure can lead to major accidents, urging the government to prioritize action against such activities to ensure safety of the public and sustainability of the power sector.
